Wild Craft and Creativity Camp

28th May - 2nd June 2010

After the huge success of our 2009 Camp we have decided to have another five day camp. The camp will have much the same format, but with more time to do all that is on offer. It will again be a gently exuberant camp, which combines the vitality of live music and dance with relaxation, green living skills, friendship, fun and play. It is set in a beautiful sheltered river meadow in North Yorkshire.

At the heart of our work in putting on these camps is the hope that through living in a beautiful, natural environment for a few days, in structures that support our wellbeing and need for nurturance, we experience a life lived more slowly, creatively and authentically. In amongst the singing, dancing, drumming, green living, wild craft and artistry we also want to offer spaces  to explore our deeper concerns and to find ways to build  sustainable culture.
It is in this vein that we are delighted to be able to offer some workshops that we believe are of profound significance at this time of economic and ecological crisis.   Rachel Wood  will be leading some workshops in 'The Work that Reconnects', she asks :
“Are you concerned about the condition of our world?  Would you like to strengthen your ability to respond?”
“Over 4 days we will introduce a series of 2 hour workshops in ‘The Work that Reconnects’, an empowerment approach developed by Joanna Macy.  Deepening feelings of connection with life we will explore how to use our emotional concerns as a source of information and inspiration to feel empowered to act for a life sustaining society. We will offer a variety of experiential practices; such as interactive exercises, guided visualisations and meditations; and develop the inner resources and practical tools needed to respond.”

To find out more about Joanna Macy and her work please go to www.joannamacy.net.

After the huge success of our promenade production of  Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer's Night Dream'  directed by Mary Coaten, there will be an opportunity for budding thespians to shine in our 2010 production of 'Twelfth Night' This will be performed one evening, it is open to all ages and abilities.

New for this year is:

We would like to welcome Mozes Keita from Guinea who will be leading workshops in African Drumming and Dancing

We are delighted to have Helen Bee  to run some Singing workshops at camp this year. Bee (as she likes to be known) trained with Frankie Armstrong and Darien Pritchard in leading Natural Voice workshops. Bee teaches songs by living composers as well as her own material (which is wonderful). She says: “ I teach songs from around the world and choose songs which I feel are powerful and beautiful, that will leave us feeling moved,” I think we are in for a treat.
To find out more about Bee go to her website:www.harmonybee.co.uk

Jenny wowed us last year with her Flamenco dancing, and is coming back to run some full-blown workshops in this exquisite dance form.

A warm welcome to Roger King, who will be offering a  DANCE FOR LIFE session. Roger says “This involves a combination of ecstatic wave music with creative  and vital  connections with self and others. I mix body, mind and spirit dance processes, to affirm the miracle we truly are, based around my work as a therapist”.
Roger will also be running a disco for us one evening. For more information go to www.rogerking.info

We are very happy that a familiar face at Gaia Tribe Murray Edscer will this year be offering some Drama workshops. Murray is trained in Drama, Theatre Studies, and Dramatherapy. He is an experienced workshop leader and has led numerous courses in theatre-training and personal development.

Lyssa Clayton will be offering a workshop in basic Homeopathy as well as workshop in Non Violent Communication for Families. For more information about NVC go to www.cnvc.org

New at camp this year will be the Face Painting Fairy, she says:
"I bring you a bewildering array of Fantastical exotic and beautiful designs. All the colours of the rainbow, so many sparkles you will be dazzled. This is not just for children  … so make sure you come and find me and I’ll “Paint on a smile!”

Siriol Davies and Tom Gough who will show us the fine art of Felting and making jewellery from felt.

Returning favourites:
Keith Jackman, will be co-ordinating a Scratch Band, who will perform during the camp, certainly at the Cabaret. So for any budding musicians, wannabee rock stars, here’s chance, bring along any musical instruments

Rachel Lee will again be making showing us how to an earth kiln, offering Pottery sessions and showing us how to fire the pots we make them

Jude Watkins will be running workshops in rush weaving and making coil baskets

Green woodworking with Julien Cole

Chris will again be starting off each day with the noble art of Bread making; he is a master, so if you would like to learn his secret (in bread making that is!) then join him.

Activities for children of all ages:
We are very pleased to have the talents of Paula Kershaw of Leeds Children’s Circus at camp this year. Paula says: “ we will be offering Circus skills workshops - fun for adults and children alike. Our workshops are great fun, good exercise, promote confidence and self belief, delivered in a non competitive and supportive environment where children can learn at their own pace. Try your hand at spinning a plate, diablo,  juggling, and stilt walking to name a few. Watch out for "Its a Knockout" crazy team games and madcap mayhem fun for all the family.”

Our favourite Storyteller Noel Watkins is back to delight us with tales of magic , mystery and enchantment.

Arts and crafts activities

We will again have a dedicated space for the younger ones, which this year is going to be co-ordinated by Sam O Brien. Sam is bringing a kids library in a bell tent and a reading space in a tipi with a log burning stove so it's nice and cosy...we will also make a nice garden for people to sit in, and we have some new hammocks this year too! She will be offering lovely crafts activities such as like garland making, face/ body painting, veggie planting and advice, jewellery making, lantern making, and general kiddies crafts.
Most workshops will be open to children, and there will lots of additional activities for them.

For teenagers

We will have a separate hanging out space for the teenagers…. A small marquee with lighting. Debs and Sam Stelling are going to support the teens area, and help them to set up some of the activities they would like to have at camp. If you are a teenager and have any ideas of what you would like to have at cam, please do contact us.So far there has been interest in having hip-hop workshops, graffiti art as well as canoeing on the river. We hope that teens will be fully involved in the life of the camp, and they will want to contribute their ideas and their energies. We are offering a few working tickets to teenagers to help with site crew stuff, set up and take down of the camp and in supporting the teen area with activities, maintenance etc. Let us know if you are interested and what you would like to offer.

This year we will again be having a Market afternoon, where folks can sell their goods, from cakes and pottery to second hand books, clothes etc.

An important and regular feature at our camp and often the highlight is the Camp Cabaret, where we hope to see would-be performers entertain us with offerings from what they have learnt in the workshops, or otherwise! So come prepared to do us all a good turn by having a turn on our camp stage.
